People living in Wrexham are warned to keep an eye out for opportunistic telephone scammers.

Wrexham Trading Standards issued the warning after a scam in which a resident lost hundreds of pounds to bogus tech experts.

The resident was cold-called by a scammer claiming to be from BT, telling him that his laptop was infected with a virus and required cleaning.

The victim provided the scammers remote access to his laptop and his bank account.

The callers went on to withdraw money from the residents’ account and apply for a loan in his name.

Roger Mapleson, team leader at Wrexham Trading Standards, said: “There is no way scammers could know whether or not your laptop, computer or any other device has a virus.

“They tend to add weight to their claims by pretending to be from a big company, such as BT, Microsoft or Apple – but these companies never carry out such calls.

“These callers can be very convincing. If they catch you busy with other things on your mind, your guard could be down.

“Simply put, never give anyone you don’t trust access to your bank account and never give them information on your computer or laptop.

“Technology means it is easier than ever for them to remotely link to your machine with just a few key pieces of information, allowing them to steal what they want.

“If you think you have been the victim of a scam, contact your bank immediately.”

To report a crime, contact North Wales Police on 101.
